Ciao, Bella!

Black cats, lithe and slender, how proudly
You prance, the dazzled streets your habitat,
Flouncing through life with immaculate grace,
Elegance your weapon against misfortune.

Commedia dell’arte of the teeming piazza!
Columbine’s wiles turn the world on its head.
Superstition seethes under the paving stones
Whereon new shoes execute the passegiata.

No surface escapes the mirror’s verdict;
The will to be beautiful squeezes every purse;
Mannequin poses arrange the world thus,
Magnetic fields of attraction and repulsion.
